Johannes Itten, in the book "The Art of Color" describes violet “as the antipode of yellow, or consciousness, violet is the color of the unconscious - mysterious, impressive and sometimes oppressive, now menacing, now encour­aging, according to contrast. Violet is the hue of piety.”

The historical context highlights the significance of purple clothing, serving as a visible marker of social hierarchy and privilege, rooted in the the rarity and cost of the natural purple dye known as 'Tyrian purple.’ It took the colour-bearing glandular mucus of 12,000 snails to produces just 1.4 gram of the pure dye – just enough to dye the trim of one garment.
